Kotzebue Wind Farm Expansion

Kotzebue, Alaska

PROJECT SUMMARY

Name of Project
Kotzebue Wind Farm Expansion

Location of Project
Kotzebue, Alaska

Client
Kotzebue Electric Association

Situation
The Kotzebue Electric Associatin (KEA) needed a way to reduce diesel fuel consumption at the utility along with the overall cost of electricity for KEA’s customers and contracted the construction of additional wind turbines to accomplish this goal.

Unique Challenges
Transporting the crane and wind equipment was a major challenge due to the size of the wind components and the crane needed which were too large to go through the small village streets.

Solution
STG identified an alternate barge landing that had not been used in decades and we utilized marine survey to map a route for the landing craft. Completed in spring 2012, the Kotzebue Wind Farm Expansion Project involved the installation of two 900 kW wind turbines on 75-meter towers in Kotzebue, Alaska. STG completed project activities for the Kotzebue Electric Association (KEA) over a one-year period and oversaw logistics, foundation installation, turbine erection, and overall project management associated with design-build responsibilities. STG overcame the challenge of getting the crane to Kotzebue through innovative measures, even conducting a rare barge-to-barge transfer in the open waters of the Chukchi Sea. The installation approximately tripled the generation capacity of KEA’s existing wind farm and reduced the cost of electricity for KEA customer’s.

Later that year, STG was awarded the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Alaska Sustainability in Construction Award for its long-term contribution to the sustainability of the community of Kotzebue.
