Sitka Blue Lake Dam Expansion

Sitka, Alaska

PROJECT SUMMARY

Name of Project
Sitka Blue Lake Dam Expansion

Location of Project
Sitka, Alaska

Client
Barnard Construction Co. Inc.

Situation
The southeast city of Sitka wanted to make strides toward reducing dependence on diesel fuel by improving upon a more than 50-year-old dam to provide more affordable energy options for the island’s 10,000 residents. The general contractor for this project needed three cranes to conduct the work and awarded the project to Alaska Crane.

Unique Challenges
All construction had to be performed from one side of the dam due to National Park access restrictions.
Working in this remote island community required barging of all of our equipment, including 42 truckloads just to get our large crane on and off the barge and to the worksite.

Solution
STG and Alaska Crane provided our Liebherr LR1600 660 – Ton crawler crane with 400 feet of lattice boom and one million pounds of counter weight to be able to swing out and pour ten yards of concrete
in over a 300-foot radius. This feat was one of the most remarkable project of its kind. In addition, we had a 100 Ton, ck 1000 operating from flexi floats to support construction on the dam face. This floating crane at the dam face was another extraordinary aspect of the project.
