Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital

Barrow, Alaska

PROJECT SUMMARY

Name of Project
Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital

Location of Project
Barrow, Alaska

Client
UIC Construction

Situation
A new hospital was being built in this northernmost community and needed pile foundation that was sustainable in permafrost conditions.

Unique Challenges
Winter construction was required, posing significant challenges due to extreme cold and 24-hour darkness.

Solution
STG completed the foundation for a new hospital located in Barrow, Alaska, during the summer of 2009. Crews installed over 350 piles at the project site and all logistics and construction activities were completed during a three-month window. Logistics for the project involved the management of supplies through four separate transportation firms to effectively mobilize, complete project activities, and demobilize project supplies during Barrow’s limited summer season. STG finished all aspects of its scope of work on time and at budget under contract with UIC Construction. STG’s work on the Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital followed previously executed foundation installation services for a new hospital in Nome, Alaska, completed during the 2008-2009 winter season.
