Gambell Wind Turbines

Gambell, Alaska

PROJECT SUMMARY

Name of Project
Gambell Wind Turbines

Location of Project
Gambell, Alaska

Client
Alaska Village Electric Cooperative

Situation
The community is located on a remote island in the Bering Sea (about 40 miles from Russia) where they have one of the highest energy costs in the US. AVEC integrated wind to deliver lower cost and sustainable power.

Unique Challenges
Building in an isolated location in the middle of Bering Sea created barging challenges for the team. Barging into Gambell is uniquely challenging due to winds and beach landings.

Solution
Completed in 2009, STG’s installation of three 100 kW wind turbines in the St. Lawrence Island community of Gambell is one of the ten village-scale wind power installations STG has successfully completed for the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative. Each of these wind power installations has involved unique foundation challenges and was completed through a variety of solutions including driven pile, helical pile, pre-cast concrete, rock anchor, and poured-in-place concrete. The Gambell foundations utilized over 360 cubic yards of concrete in total.
