Stebbins Power Plant

Stebbins, Alaska

PROJECT SUMMARY

Name of Project
Stebbins Power Plant

Location of Project
Stebbins, Alaska

Client
Alaska Village Electric Cooperative

Situation
The nearly 600 residents of Stebbins rely on power produced at the community’s power plant every day. Firmly planted in the same spot for decades, an expansion of the local airport forced it to uproot. Rather than relocate the aged facility, the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC) invested in a new, state-of-the-art rural generation system.

Unique Challenges
Remote community logistics located above the arctic circle required barge and air-support only.
Additionally the design wasn’t completed when STG was awarded the project which required a flexible approach.

Solution
Together with AVEC and their design team, STG consulted on constructability, logistics, and mapped out a phased schedule to fast-track the construction of a new, more efficient power plant. From identifying long-lead materials and procuring equipment to coordinating barges and constructing the power plant, STG ensured that the project schedule was met without interrupting the community’s access to electricity.
